yep! It was my fault as I powered it up for a hand launch and noticed that the prop sounded different and sure enough, the prop flew off on climb out. It was missing for a few days before I found it. I have since painted prop tips neon yellow and added chrome strip on the backside of the prop to make it easier to find. As part of my preflight check, I make sure the prop is fully seated before taking off. I should have stopped to check the prop before hand launching when I heard the sound was different.

@@BRGT350 thanks for sharing. Unfortunately, we've lost one of the prop sets due to this and the second one, we've yet to get a full flight out of it before it slips off the rod, mid air. Thankfully this thing glides well enough to bring down safely but I'm at a loss as to how to stop it from doing this.

Mine didn't slip off the shaft, but rather the pop-off prop adapter wasn't properly seated when I powered up. Not totally sure how to keep the plastic prop adapter from coming off the motor shaft. It would be tough to find an adhesive that would adhere to the metal and plastic. One option might be to cut a circumferential groove around the motor shaft about half way between the motor and the end of the shaft, but not too deep as you don't want to make the shaft weak, and then apply some super glue into the plastic prop adapter, slide the adapter on to the prop shaft, the super glue will be displaced from the slip fit condition of the parts, but flow into the groove you cut around the shaft, but adhere to the plastic. Basically creating a locking ring of super glue that is stuck to the plastic and the groove prevents the super glue from being pulled out.

You could place it on top of the wing and fuselage so that the center of the GoPro is in line with the CG balance point on the wings. For example, if the manual states the CG is 80mm back from the leading edge of the wing, then the center of the GoPro needs to be 80mm from the leading edge of the wing as well, but also centered on the fuselage to avoid the GoPro wanting to tip the plane to a side. I don't have the manual available to check the CG number, but it is in there and that is where you want to place the camera. I would expect some additional drag from the camera and that along with the weight will reduce flight times and require more throttle to fly.

When I got home from the show, I got out my UMX A-10 and E-flite Decathlon RJG edition. The airshow surely wanted me to go fly the planes that I saw at the event!

I have yet to see a P-47 be included in the heritage flight, but agree it would have been an ideal fit. Later the P-51 was replaced by the F-16 for the Wednesday evening show. I wish they would have done a formation of the A-10's with the P-47 as part of the farewell tour of the A-10.

The additional decals came from Callie Graphics. She does the decals on all of my planes and is awesome to work with. She can surely replicate one of the Corsairs your dad worked on during the war. If you have pictures, she can turn out a set of graphics for your plane. I have one of my Corsairs done up as an early Navy WW2 Jolly Rogers and the other (the one in the video) as a Korean War USMC version. The full scale replica of the USMC one was just at the Oshkosh airshow last week.

@@BRGT350 Thanks again! I was told that one of the Corsairs my Dad worked on was flown by John Glenn (not sure how much faith I’d put in that, though). Are Callie’s decals self-adhesive like the ones furnished with the e-Flite model or water-slide? I found a photo online of a real Marine Corsair in flight, lettered for VMF-20 & numbered 11 on the cowl; that’s what I’m using as a prototype for now.

Glenn did fly Corsairs, so that could be correct. Callie's decal are printed adhesive vinyl, much like the factory decals. She has all the nomenclature decals as well for the access panels and stencils around the plane. I only put on about half of those as most I can't find where they go. She does custom work as well, which are most of my projects. She is awesome to work with. I have had her do a lot of planes, helicopters, and even some cars.

I think there were 6-8 B-25's and an A-26 at Oshkosh this year. It was an awesome showing of twin engine medium bombers. The A-26 flew over from England Monday morning to be at the show. That thing was covered in oil and exhaust. I loved it! I do think this was the first airshow that a B-17 wasn't on display or flew. Aluminum Overcast was kind of on display, but at the museum and not on the show grounds. Seeing 2 B-29's and a Lancaster flying together was epic.

@BRGT350 We have a B-25 and B17 Sentimental Journey coming to a town of only 22,000 people. I think last time Sentimental Journey showed up maybe 100 people were there... 150 tops.

I can't recall the B-25 that accompanies the B-17, but I think I recall it having the blue cowls. There is an incredible video of both flying together in the desert set to the music from the opening of John Adams. It was all shot from a helicopter and some of the best footage ever recorded of the B-17 and B-25.

the Micro XCub 450mm flies for 5-7 minutes depending on throttle. I have no idea how far the transmitter will reach, but I am sure it is farther than you can see the plane. The micro trainers are small and you need to keep them in close. At those ranges, 2.4gHz transmitters have no problem. The plane will be out of sight before it loses connection.

yes, but the diameter can be altered by the pressure of the tire. With the pressure I am using, the radius of the Super Timber tires are about the same or even less than the stock foam ones, but when the plane is lifted up, the tires measure slightly larger than stock. The weight collapses the sidewall just enough to reduce the radius.

It was a leftover antenna from another project that I stuck on the fuselage. There are also a bunch of small placard decals around the plane as well. I used to have a pitot tube under the wing, but kept bumping it, so I took it off.

Also @BRGT350 , what battery checker do you recommend? My aeroscout mini tells me when i have to land by dropping the thrust to 50%, i immediately cut throttle and land. So, i dont have one yet.

I use the Spektrum Smart Checker, which works awesome for checking both Smart and regular batteries. I can do firmware updates to my Smart batteries, use it as a servo driver/tester, and even recharge my phone with it. I don't think it will check the batteries in the Micro trainers, which is pretty normal that battery checkers don't check 1S packs. For flying, set the timer on your phone for 6 minutes and land when it hits zero.

I think the Twin Timber springs are much stiffer, which is the opposite direction of what I would want to go. I would prefer softer springs. I have the springs from the original Timber and thought about installing those on the Evolution. While I have had plenty of people tell me that I am wrong, I found the Super Timber tires work far better on the 1.5m Timber and Maule than I ever expected. I did it mostly for looks, in fact, looks was the only real reason I wanted to do this. The improved ground handling was an unexpected bonus. They made even more of a difference on the Maule, which has tires made of rock. From testing out the tires on the Timber and Maule, I would say that these tires are a good fit for the Timber X, 1.5m Timbers, and Maule. Might be too big for the 1.3m Carbon Cub, but the tires are actually pretty good on that one already. Not sure how well they will work on the Twin Timber, which is really heavy. Not sure if it is heavier than the Super Timber or not. The lighter weight models allow you to run lower pressures in the tires, which make them perform more like real tundra tires. The heavier models need more air pressure, which is basically increasing the spring rate of the suspension. The tires aren't absorbing as much force, so the gear springs have to do the work instead.

@BRGT350 I think the twimber springs are awesome. If you have a harder landing, there's no keepers to bend and they seem about the same stiffness really. My evo has the same bounce as it did before but without the having to carry spare springs. I've had 2 or 3 not so perfect landings ( my wife really) and we seen no ill effects from it. These new wheels will just give a little bit more travel and flexibility.

I will keep those Twin Timber springs in mind. The updated 1.5m Evolution uses those springs. I still have the original springs on my Evolution with a lot of flights on them. You can see in the video that they are kind of bent. I was doing touch and goes earlier this year and the gear caught a hole in the fabric runway that caused the plane to come to an abrupt halt with the gear twisted on the spring. I thought for sure the gear broke as I was coming in a fast clip for a quick touch and go without any intention of stopping, so catching a tire in the fabric runway was really bad. Thankfully, no damage and after untangling the gear, I was back up in the air. The springs are still out of shape from that incident.

@BRGT350 lol. Yeah mine have the original springs on it too. I think I even have two sets of spares.

I don't have any spares, other than the original Timber springs that I removed when I made my old Timber a dedicated float plane. The silly thing is that I made it a dedicated float plane and haven't flown it from the water in years. Our club field used to flood every spring and we would fly float planes for about a month. This spring it was too dry and we never did a float fly. I have water all around me in the form of Lake Michigan, inland lakes, a lake behind my house, and a lot of rivers. Yet, my Timber float plane just hangs in the garage.

I think a kit is a great idea. Hopefully one will be available in the future. Until then, the parts shown in the video work pretty good. Actually better than I was expecting.

And you can adjust the diameter and spring rate of the tire by adjusting the pressure. I wish I had a little tire pressure gauge to know what pressures I am running! Instead I measure the diameter of the tire and make sure both are the same and that is how I adjust the pressure. I could probably go with a touch more air, but they are pretty well matched on the 1.5m Timber at 4.75" diameter. That is with a 2700mAh 4S pack in the nose. Personally, I think these tires are better suited on the smaller planes like the 1.5m Timbers and Maule than the larger ones.

Agree that would be a more manageable size, but if you want a RC B-17, this is pretty much the only option.

@@BRGT350 one could configure for RC a smaller sized replica. More to my point, I prefer a static replica (actually, several), highly detailed and historically accurate.

For a scale model B-17, the HK Models (not the same as Hobby King) 1/32 B-17 is considered the best on the market. It is complex to build, but the detail is best in class. I have a bunch of the old Revell/Monogram 1/48 B-17G models and I find those to be the best size for display. Avoid the Academy 1/72 B-17F. That kit is garbage. I almost threw it away during construction as it is so bad. Besides the Hobbyking 1875mm B-17, I am not aware of any other RC B-17's available. E-flite used to have a RC 1/48 B-17, but that is long gone. I have one that sits with my static models.

@@BRGT350 , I prefer by far a large, super-detailed, static model to something I could not recognise at 100 metres. I already caught the difference between "Hobby King" and "Hong Kong Models". I am good at spelling, writing, and reading, though poor at maths. Or seeing.

I have seen a few done with foil or chrome paint. It looks really good, but like you, not something I would try myself. I have used metal foil for sections of model planes and it isn't fun to work with. I can't imagine doing an entire aircraft with it!

The P-51 has one of the most incredible exhaust notes. The heritage flights at Oshkosh bring tears to my eyes each year that I am there. It is such a moving and emotional part of the event.

it was an incredible flight to see in person! This was the 2022 flight, last year it was with A-1 Skyraiders and the F-35. Sucks the "Shorts" format cuts off the ends of the frame to make it vertical. I will try and film the flights vertically this year.

I have mine inflated to 4.75", but you can easily change the diameter based upon how much air you add or remove. I thought I saw someplace that they can be inflated to almost 6", but now I can't find where I saw that. While the tire currently measures 4.75" diameter, the radius to the bottom of the tire is actually 1 7/8", which is about the same as the factory Timber foam tire. The amount of air I have in the tire and the weight of the plane has the tire radius reduced to the contact patch. I find this to be just about perfect for grass operations and a 2700 4S battery.

The spring loaded strut is the same as it was on the V1 and V1.5 Cherokee. What changed was the tiller arm on the top of the strut assembly. Before, you could only access the retention screw from the top, which is blocked by the fuselage. Now the screw can be reached from the horizontal position and you don't have to cut into the fuselage to service the nose gear. I find it easy to transport fully assembled in my Ford Fiesta. Since there are very few cars smaller or with less room, transportation shouldn't be an issue. Unless you have a Miata. I don't remove the wings for transport as the plane fits just fine fully assembled. I do need to watch to make sure I don't bump the stabilator or the extra antennas I added.

The B-17 was an engineering masterpiece! I flew on Yankee Lady a few years ago and it was incredible. Awesome to be sitting in the nose looking out over the bombsight with nothing but a piece of 80 year old plexiglass between me and the earth. It was also shocking how thin the skin was on the plane. There were also a lot of gaps where the wind would blow through and I remember sitting up in the nose thinking that if I dropped my car keys or phone, there is a good chance they will fall through the nose turret under the seat.

Yeah, nah. B29s don't have ball turrets or chin turrets - they have a nose wheel where that chin turret is on the B17.

Ha, no, that is not a B-29. Have you ever seen a B-29? If so, you would know that is clearly not one of them. There are only 2 flying B-29's in the world. Doc and FiFi. Doc has never been to MKG airport and FiFi was last there in 1994 or 1995. The B-17 in the video is Yankee Lady, which used to be based out of Willow Run and it come to Muskegon a few times each summer to give rides and for the airshow. I have flown on Yankee Lady and spent many hours around the aircraft and with her at events. I am 100% positive that she is a B-17 and not a B-29. The only think she has in common with a B-29 is that they were both designed by Boeing (Yankee Lady was Vega built and not Boeing built), they are aluminum, have 4 radial engines, and share the main gear tires. That is it.

Sorry Sargent, but that is not a B-29. It is 100% a B-17, the one that used to be based at Willow Run where the B-24's were made during the way. I have flown on Yankee Lady and I am sure I would know that I was flying in a B-17 and not a B-29.

Sorry to hear about your uncle. The loss of lives in the air war during WW2 was staggering. Never since and never again (hopefully) will we see that again. The crews that climbed into the aircraft and headed off to fight for our freedom were all heroes. We are thankful for every single one of them.

Sadly her days of flying are over for awhile. She was sold last month and will be taken apart and shipped to New Zeeland for restoration. I doubt I will ever see her fly again. I am thankful I had a chance to fly on Yankee Lady a few years ago and for all the times I got to see her at airshows and events. She will be missed.

Sorry to hear about the crash. Sounds like it may have stalled and went in, which is easy to do with the micro trainers. I had my nephew flying one and he pulled the power back from about 15 feet in the air and it stalled and went nose into the ground. Thankfully it was the grass and only the prop came off. The servo sounds like it broke a tooth which is why it wasn't reacting properly. I have broken servo gears before and they act just as you described. What I have found with these micro planes is that due to the high weight they have a high wing loading meaning they need a good amount of airspeed to keep them in the air. Pulling back on the power too much can cause the wings to stall and the plane goes right into the ground. The recovery is to push the nose forward with the elevator, add power, and gently pull up on the elevator as air speed recovers. For a beginner or at low altitude, this is almost impossible to get it all done in time. It seems counterintuitive to push the elevator forward when the plane is in a dive, but that is what is needed to help pick up airspeed and recover. Pulling back on the stick for full up elevator in a stall is going to cause the plane to never recover. Going nose first into the ground is a classic stall condition and these planes can stall very easily with the power reduced. I find they fly best around 60-70% throttle and land best with power on. Pulling the power back to idle on landing will cause a stall. I cut the power to idle when I am just about a foot off the ground so that the prop isn't powered when it touches down.

@BRGT350 Guess we'll never know if the elevator servo was bad prior to the crash, but I think it was. My boy has done well with his UMX Turbo Timber EVO. My hope is the Xcub can be a cheaper/more durable option for my 9yr old. Also, it seems like the small servos are working pretty hard to move the control surfaces. All that takes is a little friction on the rods. When we get the new plane, we'll compare the two and tear down the bad servo. Since they don't sell spare parts separately, I'm guessing there isn't a good way to take this fuselage apart.

yeah, that is always the hard part as there is a chance the servo had a problem prior to the crash and locked up in flight. I had that happen to me once with one of my planes. It had a broken servo tooth from impact during transport, it checked out fine during pre-flight, but once I got in the air, the servo found the broken tooth and the plane crashed. Locked up the rudder servo just after take-off. The UMX Turbo Timber Evolution is such a fantastic flying model, one of the best I have ever flown. I find it easier than the micro trainers, but I am also used to the Timber and have it really dialed in with my NX8. The nice thing about the micro trainers is that I can let kids try it out where I wouldn't let them try my other planes. The youngest kid I have had try the Micro Cub was 10 without any flight experience. She did ok, but I had my fingers hovering over the sticks to jump in and help. So much easier with a traditional buddy-box. My 12 year old nephew has flown the micro Mustang and did ok, but had a lot of crashes from pulling the power back too much and stalling. He can fly his Carbon Cub pretty well, but struggled a bit on the micro Mustang. It was a stall every time that got him. He was used to his bigger Cub that you can pull the power back and it will glide nicely. With the micro trainers, they stall when the power is pulled back too far. One trick on the props, paint the tips with neon paint to make them easier to find in the grass. Hopefully you can get a replacement soon and get back into the air!

@BRGT350 Yeah I should paint the prop. I am also 75% done with CAD modeling the prop hub. Hopefully we can print those instead of buying the whole assembly. Was showing my 12yr old how to use SolidWorks and our 3D printer. That or are these prop savers generic and purchasable by themself? I hadn't seen them before but I'm new to RC planes.

Well done on designing one in SolidWorks! I spent nearly 20-years as a SolidWorks designer before I moved to a different career. The break-away prop hub on the micro trainers is similar to other planes in this class, but I don't think they are interchangeable. The prop for the Mustang and Cub are the same and you can use either one, however the spinners are different, but that is cosmetic. I do know Horizon is working on getting props in faster than originally planned. I don't think anyone is breaking them, but they are losing them. I lost one for about a week or so before finding it. I lost it in the air and it landed in some tall grass. It was ran over by the lawnmower, but wasn't damaged. I cleaned it up and still use it. I painted the prop tips neon yellow and used some chrome markers to paint wide stripes on the backside of the prop blades since the prop usually faces down and the rear is up. Since the prop is designed to pop off, it is a good idea to check it before each flight. If one of the clip-in tabs isn't fully seated, the prop will depart in flight. You shouldn't need to replace the hub on the props unless you had a hard impact on pavement or concrete. My prop comes off almost every flight when I land in the grass, which is what it is designed to do in order to prevent damage. The prop coming off is normal, unless it happens in the air.

Thank you! Logan is 17 now and busy with a project car and girlfriend, but still comes out to the flying field to get in a few flights with the club. He has a Sport Cub S2 that he flies and I let him fly a number of my planes as well. Last winter he got into Microsoft Flight Sim and spending time on that. I hope he does something either aviation or automotive related as he would be good at it. He is a smart kid!

Yeah, she is something very special. I am going to miss seeing her around and at airshows. She would spend time at the local airport each summer and I would always take time to go visit.

It isn't the most historically accurate Hellcat and I am not sure if the decals came applied or applied at assembly. I bought it used. The wing National Insignia is in the wrong spot and that has bothered me along with the paint colors being off. For the $30 I paid for it, the plane is ok with the minor errors. It flies remarkably well. This is a good reminder that I need to get it out and fly it this summer. It only went out once last summer.

I had the Tower P-51, but sold it to another club member as I had way too many P-51's all about the same size. I still have my 1.1m HobbyZone/Parkzone Corsair and 1.1m E-flite P-47. I really like how the smaller warbirds fly and they are less of a headache than the larger ones. I just charge up a 2200 3S, throw it in the air, and I am flying. No fuss with retracts or worrying about the runway. Just toss and fly. I miss these simple park flyers.

@@BRGT350 Yeah Retracts are always a annoyance in one way or another everybody eventually will have problems with em no matter what model it is.

Not sure as it has only gone on a few short test flights and the flight time will be heavily dependent on the type of flying with scale flying giving the maximum flight time and 3D/advanced aerobatics having the lowest flight time.

the Micro P-51 is cheaper than the UMX P-51. It will hold up better to crashes, but gives up a lot of scale fidelity and flight performance. For me, the UMX P-51 is 100% the way to go, but I am also not looking for a first plane to get started. If I was just getting started, the Micro P-51 would be high on my list.
